Why Audiobooks Make Cleaning Better
There is a strange difference between cleaning for an hour and listening to a book for an hour while you happen to clean.

And once the story gets good, something funny starts happening.
You stop checking the clock.
You finish the kitchen and decide you might as well clean the living room too.
Then you realize you only have twenty minutes left in the chapter.

I have found that different kinds of books work better for different jobs.

And for repetitive jobs like dishes or vacuuming, something light and easy to follow usually works best.
The goal is not to pick the most impressive book.
It is to pick the one that makes you want to put your headphones on and get started.
The Cleaning Trick I Actually Like
There is one strategy that works especially well:
Only listen to a certain audiobook while you clean.
Do not play it in the car.
Do not listen while walking.
Save it specifically for chores.
Then when you want to know what happens next, you have a reason to start cleaning.
Is this basically bribing yourself with a book?
Yes.
Do I have a problem with that?
Not at all.

You do not need a full cleaning day.
Put on an audiobook.
Choose one room.
Start there.
If you stop after twenty minutes, you still got something done.
If you keep going because the story is good, even better.
Either way, the house gets cleaner and you get farther into a book.
